The NFC project in Nice involves banks, transportation operators and various retailers. France-based mobile-phone network Orange and Gemalto last year announced their involvement in the project (see story).

Gemalto is supplying Crédit Agricole with the Trusted Service Management operating service that enables the secure deployment and management of mobile contactless payments, regardless of the mobile network, according to Gemalto.

Beginning last month, customers of Crédit Agricole’s Provence Côte d’Azur branch could opt to subscribe to the NFC payment method. Subscribers may use their mobile phones to make purchases at participating merchants in the Nice and Côte d’Azur communities.
