The agreement reaches approximately 142 million mobile customers in 14 markets, the companies say in a March 17 press release.

Mopay's services connect to Deutsche Telekom's international payment hub, called the Service Delivery Platform. Consumers who use mopay provide a phone number to a merchant, and mopay sends a PIN to that phone. The consumer then provides the PIN to the merchant for authentication.

Mopay also has carrier billing agreements with Telefonica, Telenor and Singtel.

Deutsche Telekom also has a billing relationship with PayPal. The telco also works with B&S Card Service and Intercard to enable mobile payments at vending machines and the point of sale.
