DeviceFidelity Inc. on Wednesday said it was issued a patent for using near-field communication technology to perform payment and other activities on mobile devices.

The Richardson, Texas, company, which works with Visa Inc., MasterCard Inc., banks and other companies on mobile payment services, said the patent describes how an external device, such as a dongle, cover or protective case, can be used to equip a phone with NFC technology.
Deepak Jain, the chief executive of DeviceFidelity, said the patent could help accelerate "universal adoption of NFC."
