Diebold has launched a mobile-enabled, self-checkout concept based on its automated teller machine systems.
The new product combines ATMs' core functions with contactless mobile payment and self checkout. The product aims to build on the growing market for in-store mobile payments, Diebold said in a Jan. 14 news release.
With the new concept, consumers can use their mobile device to scan items while shopping. Once finished, they tap their phone at the self-checkout unit to pay for the items scanned with either a stored card account or cash presented at the terminal. Consumers can also use the terminal to get cash back.
Diebold plans to showcase the new concept at the National Retail Federation "BIG" Show in New York from Jan. 17 to Jan. 19.
