Digital River Helps PayPal Expand

PayPal Inc. said it is providing online payment processing in Brazil and Mexico through a partnership with Digital River Inc.

Digital River, of Minneapolis, provides the World Payments system that supports over 170 currencies in more than 190 countries. The system handles checkout page optimization, real-time fraud detection, back-office reconciliation and other functions. The companies have worked together for nine years to enable payments on multiple continents.

"By leveraging the Digital River World Payments infrastructure, PayPal has been able to rapidly and efficiently localize its services in new geographies," Paul Bridgewater, Digital River's vice president of world payments, said in a press release Tuesday.

"With proven technologies and worldwide banking relationships in place, our payment solutions are designed to help companies enter online markets quickly and cost-effectively," Bridgewater added.

Mario Mello, PayPal's general manager for Brazil, said in the release that "Digital River World Payments is a very important part of our payments program and will definitely offer a key structure support for the expansion of the company in Brazil."

PayPal, of San Jose, Calif., is a unit of eBay Inc.
