Discover Launches Canadian Card-Acceptance Push With Moneris Deal

Discover Financial Services and Toronto-based debit and credit card processor Moneris Solutions Corp. on Oct. 26 announced an agreement that Discover hopes will lead for the first time to broader acceptance of Discover’s cards in Canada.

Under the terms of the deal, beginning next year Moneris will add the Discover and Diners Club brands to the lineup of card brands it offers its merchant-acquiring customers, the companies said. Moneris, Canada’s largest acquirer, already supports payments initiated with cards branded by Visa Inc., MasterCard Worldwide, American Express Co. and Interac, Canada’s debit card network.

Discover presently lacks a “significant” presence in Canada, a spokesperson for the Riverwoods, Ill.-based issuer says.

Beginning with the Moneris deal, Discover plans to “aggressively expand our acceptance footprint in the coming years throughout Canada–a popular travel destination for our cardmembers–and provide cardmembers from all over the world with the ability to use their cards at merchants throughout the country,” Gerry Wagner, Discover vice president of global acceptance, said in a statement.

Discover last year began expanding global acceptance for its various brands, including Discover, Diners Club and the Pulse debit brand (see story).

As part of that effort, Discover in March 2009 announced a deal with Interac, Canada’s debit network, enabling Discover, Diners Club and Pulse cardholders to withdraw cash from many of Canada’s ATMs, which number more than 58,000.
