The app supports payments through SCVNGR's LevelUp technology. The app automatically unlocks $3 of credit to spend at Dunn Bros for every $50 that consumers spend; consumers have the option of donating loyalty rewards to a neighborhood food shelf.

LevelUp provides access to customer data that can aid stores in analyzing purchase patterns, and engagement tools that allow franchisees to act on data and provide relevant offers. The Dunn Bros app functions much like the LevelUp payments app, only it is white-labeled with the Dunn Bros brand. LevelUp has also recently partnered with NCR to better integrate its payments technology at restaurants.

After a pilot at four regionally dispersed locations, Dunn Bros plans to deploy its app at all of is coffee shops by early December.

"Our customers love the app," says Paula Martinez, store owner at Dunn Bros in Bettendorf, Iowa, in an Oct. 23 press release. Her shop was one of the four app pilot locations.

"Customers pay with the app all the time, which is helping us increase sales, speed up the checkout process and save money on payment processing fees," she adds. "Our customers find it easy to use, and they love the rewards, so it's a hit with both customers and staff."

Other coffee sellers, such as Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, have reported success in their mobile payments initiatives.
