The vast majority of banking and law-enforcement officials in the Asia-Pacific region have banking cards with chips that carry the global EMV anti-fraud application, suggest survey data from Visa Inc. released Tuesday. Visa says in a statement it based the findings on a computer poll of 190 "bank, vendor, law-enforcement and other security experts from Australasia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and other regional markets." The poll took place at the Visa Asia Pacific Security Summit 2009 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 27 May. Of the respondents, 75% carried EMV chip cards. Visa says 27% of its cards in the Asia-Pacific region have chips. The card company did not break down the nationalities of poll respondents but noted that Malaysia is among the most advanced countries in the world in use of EMV chip cards.
