Banks in the Pacific Island nation of Fiji should invest in educating their customers on the use of ATMs and payment card terminals, the Consumer Council suggests in a May 5 report.
The Consumer Council is an independent body that looks into consumer affairs and complaints against businesses in Fiji.
According to the council’s Banking Services Report, not knowing how to operate ATMs and EFTPOS PIN-debit payment terminals has contributed to growing teller lines in banks in Fiji among customers wanting to withdraw cash.
Norman Wilson, chairman of the Association of Banks in Fiji, said in a statement he agrees more consumers are using tellers and that more education is needed on banking services in Fiji, where many individuals are apprehensive of the alternative payments channels and continue to pay with cash.
The association and its members will take the lead in educating customers on the use of alternative channels, he said, noting banks would conduct workshops and expos during which they also would address any questions participants might have.
