First Data, VeriFone Introduce Terminals

IMGCAP(1)]

First Data Corp. has added two proprietary point-of-sale terminals to its product lineup, the transaction processor officially announced today. The FD300 enables merchants to use one payment terminal for multiple merchants in the same location, such as a hardware store that also operates a commercial sales business from the same address. The FD200 has a built-in check reader, enabling check-processing services via First Data-owned Telecheck. Both devices went on sale last quarter, First Data says. First Data sells two other proprietary terminals. In 2006, the company launched the FD100, its first self-branded proprietary terminal, and it launched the FD50 in 2008. In July, First Data told CardLine sister publication ISO&Agent Weekly that it was working on the FD400, which would work with wireless phone systems. The processor expects to launch that device in the second quarter, First Data says. "First Data's new terminal line is slowly growing to include new POS terminals that would allow First Data to not only have a new income stream but also cut its cost relating to terminals they procured from POS terminal manufacturers," says Adil Moussa, an analyst at Boston-based Aite Group LLC. "This move also puts an extra loyalty stamp on the relationship of First Data with its merchants who will be using a proprietary POS device. The terminal makers, such as Ingenico, Hypercom and VeriFone, will be even further squeezed in their market share as First Data continues the development and release of new lines of competitive POS devices." Also, VeriFone Holdings Inc. today introduced the MX880, as part of its MX Solutions line of payment devices. The MX880 will be available by mid-2009. The payment device includes a color video display.
