The Federal Trade Commission is asking the public to comment on the issues raised during a recent workshop exploring the use of facial recognition technology and the privacy and security implications raised by its increasing use.
The workshop, held on Dec. 8, focused on the current and future commercial applications of facial recognition technologies, explored existing uses of the technology, possible future uses and benefits and potential privacy and security concerns.
Facial detection and recognition technologies have been adopted in a variety of new ways - ranging from online social networks to digital signs to mobile apps. Their increased use has raised privacy concerns.
The FTC specifically wants public comments on the following issues:
* What are the current and future commercial uses of these technologies?
* How can consumers benefit from the use of these technologies?
* What are the privacy and security concerns surrounding the adoption of these technologies?
* Are there special considerations that should be given for their use, including to possibly vulnerable demographics such as children?
* What are the best practices for providing consumers with notice and choice regarding the use of these technologies?
