FleetCor's gift cards suffer an attack

Hackers recently gained access to some of FleetCor's systems, exposing data from its closed-loop gift cards.

In late April FleetCor learned about the suspicious activity in its stored-value cards operations and froze affected gift cards, FleetCor announced on May 3 in conjunction with its first-quarter earnings.

The affected data does not include personally identifiable information such as consumer names, Social Security or other sensitive data and the company sees to evidence that fuel cards or payment processing systems are involved, FleetCor said.

FleetCor CEO Ron Clarke told analysts it appears the hackers gained entry to affected systems through a client-access portal and the company’s internal monitoring systems detected the intrusion. “It’s early days but it appears the thing is quite limited in scope,” Clarke said.

FleetCor, with operations in 53 countries, is based in Peachtree Corners, Ga.
