The Customer Council of Hong Kong has advised the region's credit cardholders to reject card surcharges or minimum spending limits local merchants set. The council, which collects and reviews consumer complaints and serves as a consumer advocate, says some Hong Kong merchants apply surcharges of 2% of the sale or more for card purchases and set minimum spending limits for cards that can reach HK$200 (US$25.60 or 17.40 euros). The council also called on issuers to remind their customers that merchants are not supposed to impose surcharges or spending limits. The council says eight of 18 card issuers in Hong Kong refund surcharges to customers.
