Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Co. soon will enable consumers to pay their electricity bills though their mobiles phones.
The state-owned electric company supplies power to over 1 million Mumbai households and operates the city’s bus network.
“We are changing our processes to keep pace with private operators that for long have been providing alternate channels of bill payments,” a Brihanmumbai spokesperson tells PaymentsSource.
Consumers in June will be able to pay their bills online or through a mobile phone, the spokesperson says.
Reliance Infra Ltd and Tata Power Ltd are two private electricity companies that offer mobile payments.
At the moment, Brihanmumbai accepts cash, card payments and checks at its service center and also via direct debit of a bank account.
The company spokesperson reveals Brihanmumbai has reached an agreement with Citibank India Pvt Ltd to accept high-value bill payments in real time and one-day bank transfers.
Citibank India declined to comment on the agreement.
