MOL AccessPortal Bhd. has inked a strategic collaboration with U.S.-based third party payment provider PayPal to launch a prepaid card dubbed MOL PayPal–The Digital Card in Malaysia, the Malaysia-based payments provider announced July 15.
Kuala Lumpur-based EON Bank Bhd. will issue the card, which consumers may use for online shopping and gaming, according to MOL AccessPortal. MOL PayPal is the first cobranded prepaid card offered by the companies in the Asia Pacific region and will be available initially in Malaysia beginning July 19.
The card will allow Malaysians to fund a PayPal account usable for shopping on websites worldwide or to reload MOLPoints to purchase online games, products and services.
MOL, which has more than 200 game titles, will allow customers to top up the card account at more than 15,000 physical locations, including EON Bank and EONCAP Islamic Bank counters, more than 1,100 7-Eleven convenience stores nationwide, epay outlets, and MOLPoints Centres (cybercafes) around Malaysia starting on July 19. Customers of RHB Bank Bhd. and Maybank Bhd. also may transfer funds to the MOL PayPal card account through the institutions’ online-banking sites.

The card retails for 15 ringgits (US$4.67 or 3.67 euros). But cardholders can receive a 15-ringgit rebate for their first transaction of at least 150 ringgits with their PayPal account until the end of August as part of a promotion.
