Marathon Stations Joining Visa’s ReadyLink Prepaid Card Reload Network

Marathon Oil Corp. is linking its 4,000 petroleum stations to Visa Inc.’s ReadyLink prepaid card reload network, Houston-based Marathon announced today.

Approximately 2,000 Marathon stations are active on the network, and the rest will go online by then end of the year, Marathon says. Details of the agreement between Marathon and Visa were not disclosed.

“It’s a convenience for customers,” a Marathon spokesperson tells PaymentsSource.

Sales clerks at Marathon locations can load funds into customers’ Visa prepaid card accounts when cardholders provide cash or another payment means, such as a credit card. Marathon says it charges $2.95 per reload.

In a recent report, Aite Group LLC expects consumers to load $69 billion into open-loop prepaid card accounts this year (see story).

Visa’s ReadyLink network has grown to nearly 45,000 locations since its inception in 2006, Visa says.
