Through the initiative, online buyers in China would be able to use their MasterCard-branded credit cards to shop on the two retailers’ websites and have their goods delivered to them, a spokesperson for MasterCard tells PaymentsSource.

This is the first time MasterCard has offered a cross-border shopping service in China, and the card brand expects it to drive transaction-volume growth, he adds.

Online shopping has been gaining in popularity in China, and this growing trend necessitated the service, Ling Hai, MasterCard Worldwide president for Greater China, said in a statement.

“However, we know some consumers are deterred by the shipping and payment limitations when shopping on non-Chinese e-commerce portals,” he said. “This promotion is designed to simplify the shopping process for our cardholders and offer them added flexibility when shopping at designated Taiwanese shopping websites.”
