MasterCard Worldwide today introduced an online, interactive financial-management tool that enables debit cardholders to track their spending. San Antonio-based Security Service Federal Credit Union is the first financial institution to offer MasterCard's Money Manager. The service enables users to track spending on multiple cards by day, month or over a specific time period. The service works better with debit cards because of how often consumers use them for everyday, non-discretionary spend, Patricia Preston, MasterCard senior vice president of U.S. debit product management and development, tells CardLine. The service automatically categorizes transactions by merchant, which is different from what other budgeting programs offer, Preston says. Users also can arrange a budget and then track their spending against the budget, she says. MasterCard says it plans to sign up more financial institutions to use the service, but did not reveal additional details.
