Exxon Mobil is the world's largest publically traded oil and gas company, while Kum & Go, Giant Eagle and Rite Aid expand MCX's reach into convenience retail and pharmacy. More than 50 merchants are now part of MCX, totaling more than 100,000 locations. Overall, these merchants handle $1 trillion in annual payments.

"We are seeing tremendous interest and momentum with new merchants, large and small, coming on board to work together to offer a mobile commerce solution that will best serve the needs of customers and merchants alike," says Dekkers Davidson, CEO of MCX, in a Dec. 9 release.

MCX is building a mobile wallet that will work across its network of merchants. The initiative recently made deals with FIS and Gemalto to provide the underlying technology.
