Microsoft Corp. is joining Eurosmart, a Brussels, Belgium-based association that develops security standards for smart cards, terminals and other electronic applications.
But since Eurosmart develops standards for various aspects of chip-based security, Microsofts membership may or may not signal a bigger role in payments for the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant.

Eurosmart is an international non-profit association founded in 1995. It states its mission as expanding the worlds smart secure devices market by improving quality and security applications.

Association members are manufacturers of smart cards, semiconductors, terminals, equipment for smart cards system integrators, application developers and issuers who work in communication, marketing, security, electronic identity, and prospect emerging markets, Eurosmart says.
Microsoft products are used by millions of people as well by corporations and governments around the world, Kambiz Rahimi, a principal architect for Microsoft, says in the release.
The digital market only works when we equip consumers with secure technology, Rahimi adds. As part of Eurosmart, we want to continue to set the highest security standards for Europe and the world.
