Passbook allows consumers to access coupons, gift cards and boarding passes from the phone's lock screen. The limited wallet also presents reminders to consumers based on their time and location, such as by presenting an airline boarding pass near the user's flight time.

While consumers still like to give physical gifts, mobile gift cards provide a streamlined alternative to shuffling through tons of physical cards in a stuffed wallet.

"Virtual wallets are becoming increasingly popular," says Jeff Guthrie, chief sales and marketing officer at Moneris, in a Dec. 10 press release. "In fact, a 2012 Affinion Loyalty group study has found that 61% of consumers prefer virtual over physical cards."

Moneris provides services to more than 350,000 merchant locations in North America.
