Mobile-payments company Monitise PLC is testing a service targeted at unbanked consumers in Nigeria that enables users to transfer funds with their cell phones.

The United Kingdom-based company is piloting Monitise Mobile Money in four cities and 11 rural locations under a provisional license with the Central Bank of Nigeria, which Monitise expects to grant full licenses in May, the company noted in a March 25 press release.

Users of the service may make deposits at branches of Monitise’s bank partner, Afribank. They can access the service through a Web browser on their mobile phones.
