More Indian Power Utilities Supporting Online Bill Payments

Citizens in the Indian state of Punjab may pay their electricity bills online using bankcards under a new service the Punjab State Power Corp. launched on March 1.

“We have launched this service as part of a billing-upgrade initiative after doing a pilot for a limited number of consumers,” a spokesperson for the utility tells PaymentsSource.

Consumers register for the service on the utility’s website by creating a user name and password. Once logged on, they may pay their bills on the site and see their bill details and status of payment on the screen, according to the spokesperson. The service supports only Visa-branded debit and credit cards, he says.

“This free service will allow us to avoid a heavy rush at cash counters and save time of consumers,” the spokesperson adds.

As part of reforms across power utilities in India, more power-distribution corporations are turning to online payments to increase transparency and convenience, he says. Utility boards in the state of Haryana began supporting online payments last year, as did those in the states of Maharashtra and Orissa.
