Known as RInfra in Mumbai, the power company is targeting consumers in India who prefer to pay their bills in cash but want to avoid waiting in long lines.

RInfra last week launched the Mobile Wallet Bill Payment system, allowing its 2.8 million customers to pay electricity bills through a text message, the company states in a press release.

Mumbai customers can initially create their mobile wallet accounts and load money onto them at any of more than 400 retail locations of My Mobile Payments Limited, which has partnered with RInfra for the project.

Customers can also create accounts and load money through other payment cards on the My Mobile Payments website.

In addition, customers who prefer not to establish their own wallet account can pay in cash at a My Mobile Payments store, where the clerk would use the retailer’s wallet to make the payment. The store would then send a payment confirmation as a text message to the customer.

Otherwise, a customer can a pay bill by sending a text message with the RInfra account number, payment amount and his mobile phone number to a specified wallet account code.
