Nearly 300 Collection Firms Sued In Early August

Between August 1 and August 15, 278 collection companies were named as defendants in lawsuits citing violations of either the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) or Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), according to WebRecon LLC, a Grand Rapids, Mich.-based firm that publishes "The FDCPA Litigant Alert."

During the period, 403 unique plaintiffs filed 354 FDCPA lawsuits and another 49 FCRA lawsuits. There were multiple plaintiffs involved in one case. Eighty-one plaintiffs previously filed either FDCPA, FCRA or TCPA (Telephone Consumer Protection Act) lawsuits. Combined, those plaintiffs have filed an estimated 198 lawsuits since 2001. Illinois' Northern District Court led the way with 27 lawsuits.

Year-to-date, 5,652 FDCPA, FCRA or TCPA lawsuits have been filed in the U.S. – including 4,755 citing FDCPA violations, 796 involving the FCRA and five citing the TCPA, according to WebRecon.
