New Zealand December Card Billings Drop Slightly

Consumers spent NZ$2.95 billion (US$1.5 billion of 1.05 billion euros) using credit cards in New Zealand in December, down 0.3% from NZ$2.96 billion during same month in 2008, according to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand revealed.

Domestic card billings totaled NZ$2.58 billion, down 0.4% from NZ$2.59 billion. Billings from cards issued overseas and used in New Zealand totaled NZ$364 million, down 0.3% from NZ$365 million.

Total outstandings for credit cards in New Zealand in December were NZ$5.42 billion, down 0.7% from NZ$5.46 billion in December 2008, the reserve bank data show.

Total credit card limits offered by banks to their cardholders also dropped, by 1.3%, to NZ$17.52 billion from NZ$17.75 billion.
