Based on open standards for the authority’s subway and bus systems, the plan will lead to the design, procurement and implementation of a new fare-payment system, the authority noted in a news release (see Concept of Operations).

The authority is making the plan available to the fare collection, technology, telecommunication, system integration and payments industries to stimulate discussion and to obtain input to finalize a concept that describes a system that is cost-effective and technically and commercially feasible.

PaymentsSource first reported about the authority’s plans to release a Concept of Operations in February (see story). New York transit agencies kicked off a test of contactless payments last spring (see story).

The authority plans to hold an industry-outreach presentation to the vendor community on May 10. Attendance will be limited to persons representing firms that participate in the fare collection, technology, telecommunication, system integration or payments industries, according to the authority.
