Oberthur Technologies SA this week announced it has developed a contactless payment card that lights up when it is used, instantly notifying consumers when a transaction takes place at the point of sale. The Paris-based company says Smart Lumiere is available in a dual contactless-EMV configuration or as a pure contactless card. When the translucent card enters the field of a contactless reader, it emits light. Issuers may customize the color and sequence of the light sources, the company says. Frederick Chevreton, general manager of payment products for Oberthur's card systems division, said in a press release that Smart Lumiere enables issuers to differentiate their contactless offerings, suggesting that the innovation may help to encourage broader adoption of contactless payment.
