PayByPhone has been selected by Florida International University in Miami to provide a cashless payment service for its campus parking lots.
The payment system, which is currently used throughout Miami, will be available at 4,500 FIU parking spaces in the coming weeks.
The system allows smartphone users to pay their parking fares through a mobile app, which sends users a text message when their meter is about to expire. It is also available by dialing a toll-free number.
"FIU visitors or anyone taking advantage of a meter space can now skip the pay station lines and never worry about leaving their meetings to add more time to their parking session," says Tom Hartley, the university's director of parking, in a June 27 press release.
News of the deal follows PayByPhone's announcement last month that it will provide mobile payments at
PayByPhone is a division of PayPoint, a U.K.-based e-commerce company. It handles payments for 118,000 drivers each month in southern Florida, according to the release.
