PayPal Canada is collaborating with TouchBistro to allow customers to use smartphones to "check in" and pay at restaurants.

The payments are executed through an integration of PayPal's check-in function with TouchBistro's point of sale technology. When a customer checks in with the PayPal mobile app, the account holder's name and profile picture are displayed to the clerk at the point of sale. This process, which PayPal also supports in the U.S. and U.K., enables a store's staff to identify and authenticate customers, greet them by name and process their payments.

"We're collaborating globally with existing POS providers so that businesses don't have to rip or install new hardware to deliver unique and useful mobile payment experiences for their customers," says Darrell MacMullin, managing director of PayPal Canada, in an Aug. 28 press release.

Jimmy's Coffee, a Toronto coffee shop that had previously accepted only cash and debit card payments, is one of the first restaurants to accept PayPal mobile payments at their TouchBistro iPad POS. "We believe our success stems from the great taste of our coffee and our commitment to excellent customer service," said Penny Vine, store manager at Jimmy's Coffee, in a press release.

PayPal launched photo check-in payments first in the U.S., and later debuted the service in the U.K. Square has a similar photo check-in payment function in its Square Wallet app
