Securus Technologies and JPay are launching a general-purpose reloadable prepaid card that will include access to various financial services and money transfer capabilities, as well as benefits for families handling finances of a loved one currently incarcerated.
The Mastercard paySupreme card also allows allocation of funds to an optional interest-bearing savings account as well as discounts when users fund an incarcerated loved one's trust account through the JPay platform.
Securus Technologies and JPay operate through Dallas-based Aventiv Technologies, which serves nearly 3,500 public safety, law enforcement and corrections agencies with more than 1.1 million incarcerated individuals across North America. In addition to providing various products related to emergency response, incident management and monitoring devices for safety in prisons, the company also develops financial tools for families with incarcerated loved ones.
“We saw a need to offer a secure, value-add payment option that gives our customers the opportunity to confidently make digital payments and access benefits that are commonly offered with traditional bank cards,” Peter Ohser, president of payment services at Securus, said in a Wednesday press release. “We live in a world where consumers benefit from payment cards by earning points and loyalty rewards, so we invested in creating our own prepaid card so that we can pass cost-savings onto our customers and provide a tool that can improve financial stability and reduce the possibility of falling into credit debt.”
The paySupreme prepaid card is available to JPay customers through the JPay website or mobile app. The card allows users to set up automatic payments, open an interest-bearing savings account, get free ATM access through the MoneyPass network, and load cash onto the card at more than 60,000 locations, including Walmart, 7-Eleven, CVS and Walgreens.
The card is issued through MetaBank, a unit of Meta Financial Group, a South Dakota-based financial holding company. MetaBank says it is one of the largest issuers of prepaid cards in the U.S., with more than a billion cards in partnerships with banks, program managers, payments providers and other businesses.
