Philippines Bank Launches Mobile Online-Banking Service

China Banking Corp. has launched in the Philippines a mobile version of its online-banking service customers may use to inquire about account balances, transfer funds and pay bills, the Manila-based bank announced Jan. 6.

The free “China Bank Online for Mobile” service is accessible via all data-enabled phones and through such mobile devices such as Apple Inc. iPads and iPod Touches.

“We expect 2011 to be a year which will see deeper penetration of cheaper mobile Internet devices in the country,” a spokesperson for the bank tells PaymentsSource. “Also, we are seeing a number of telecom operators introducing 3G technology, therefore pushing the agenda of mobile content.”

As such, it became increasingly necessary for the bank to launch a mobile-friendly version of its online-banking service, given the expectation that the number of consumers who will be online using their phones will grow substantially this year, he adds.

The service is available to China Bank customers enrolled in the bank’s online-banking service.

Founded in 1920, China Bank is the first privately owned commercial bank in the Philippines.
