PNC Provides Bank Momentum to Microsoft Wallet

Microsoft Wallet has a substantial consumer base, particularly stemming from its gaming business, through there aren't a lot of banks that support its mobile payments technology. The software picked up some bank momentum with this week's addition of PNC.

Customers of the $350 million-asset bank can now store their consumer and small business debit and credit card details to their Microsoft Wallet to make contactless payments anywhere where Near Field Communication is enabled, PNC confirmed Monday.

The $350 million-asset bank began quietly testing the program on volunteer Windoes 10 mobile users on July 26 and completed its rollout to all bank customers Aug. 9, said Alan Aldinger, a PNC spokesperson.

PNC follows Bank of America as one of the few banks that support NFC payments for Windows Phones, according to Microsoft blog MSPoweruser, which first reported the news Monday. It also supports Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay. Microsoft Wallet is compatible with Windows Lumia 650 or Lumia 950 and 950 XL devices.

Microsoft first included mobile payments in the Windows Phone 8 operating system released in 2012. Te Microsoft Wallet concept has been developing ever since.
