Poland's ING adds Mastercard to its digital wallet

Banks across Europe are steadily launching contactless payments via digital wallets powered by host card emulation (HCE), and Poland’s ING Bank Śląski the latest to deploy the technology within its ING app.

ING Bank Śląski recently announced the “Mastercard on the Phone” feature within the bank’s mobile app, enabling its Mastercard customers to make contactless payments with Android handsets at the growing number of merchant locations in Poland that support Near Field Communication.

Customers may link an ING Bank Śląski-issued Mastercard for NFC payment within the app, and tap to pay for up to three purchases a day without entering a PIN. Transactions above 50 złoty (US$13) require users to enter a PIN, according to the bank’s website.

HCE technology enables contactless payments by storing payment card credentials in the cloud, without accessing the secure element built into the handset, and is not supported on Apple devices.
