Poll: Bankruptcies Expected To Increase More Than 35%

Bankruptcies in 2009 will increase by more than 35% over the nearly 1.1 million cases filed last year, according to 53% of respondents to a poll conducted by Alexandria, Va.-based American Bankruptcy Institute.

Some 12% of respondents predicted that filings would increase by 35% compared with the 2008 total, while 17% said filings would increase by 30%. The poll was conducted Jan. 8-12, and asked, "Filings will rise by what percentage in 2009?"

Some 13% of respondents said that the 2009 filing total would increase 25% over 2008, and 3% said filings would increase less than 25%.

Bankruptcies in 2007 totaled 850,912, an increase of 37.8% from 617,660 bankruptcy filings in 2006.
