The company is aiming the app at consumers who send money to family members that have "pay as you go" phone plans—a common model in emerging markets in Africa, India and Latin America. Using Sendly, consumers can send credit directly to a family member's prepaid mobile phone account by addressing the payment to the recipient's mobile phone number.

The app is available for free on iTunes and Google Play.

"We know that the people who use our calling app the most are those with family and friends in other countries. With Sendly, we want to give millions of callers an easier and quicker way to provide their loved ones with credit to use on calls, texts and data,” said Mans Ullerstam, a product owner at Sendly, in a Dec. 16 press release.

Rebtel also launched its software development kit in 2013 with the aim of enabling developers to build money transfer services into their own applications.
