Stockholm-based Seamless will soon integrate Near Field Communication technology into SEQR, its mobile payment app that was originally designed around the use of QR codes.
Beginning in the first quarter of next year, SEQR users will be able to make purchases with the app from any merchant that has NFC-ready card terminals. The new NFC functionality will be automatically integrated into the SEQR app.
With the QR codes, "there has been a bottleneck with regard to how quickly we can integrate even more merchants," said chief executive Peter Fredell in an Oct. 22 news release. "Our new NFC solution eliminates this bottleneck."
The update could smooth one of major kinks in Seamless' expansion strategy. As Gareth Lodge, a London-based payments technology analyst at Celent, noted in an email yesterday: "QR is rather passé – [I've] not seen a QR for years now, to the point I’ve deleted my QR reader app."
