Skrill has partnered with Linden Lab—the San Francisco-based software developer that created Second Life—to integrate its digital payments software. During the height of Second Life's popularity, some mainstream banks such as ABN Amro and Wells Fargo attempted to open virtual branches within the game. Wells Fargo's effort, called Stagecoach Island, eventually moved to a different platform with its own digital currency ("shells").

Skrill's digital wallet will allow Second Life users to purchase what's known as Linden Dollars, which can be used buy products or services within the virtual world.

"We're looking forward to building on our digital entertainment experience and making Second Life users' experiences more enjoyable," said Christopher Russell, Skrill's chief executive, in a Jan. 8 press release.
