GlobalPlatform, an international smart card-specification group, says it has added four training sessions to its schedule in response to "strong market demand." GlobalPlatform encourages interoperable smart card systems and offers free downloads of the specifications from its Web site. The group will conduct the training sessions, designed to inform attendees about the organization's technology, on 21 Sept. and 22 Sept. at the Smart Event 2009 in Sophia Antipolis, France; 27 Oct. at the Smart Card Alliance's Smart Cards in Governance conference in Washington, D.C.; and 17 Nov. at the Cartes & Identification conference in Paris, according to a statement from the group. GlobalPlatform already has conducted training in Vienna, Austria and San Francisco. Banks, transit agencies, governments and mobile operators have issued more than 305 million GlobalPlatform-based smart cards. The group counts as members such companies as PayPal Inc. and France-based card vendors Gemalto NV and Oberthur Technologies.
