The South African National Department of Transport has picked Clear2Pay NV to develop functional testing services for EMV contactless cards and payment terminals in the country, the agency announced last week.
Public-transport systems across South Africa under the Department of Transport would use the testing services to trial their fare collection systems, according to a press release.
The Brussels-based technology company signed the agreement for the initiative with Techso Pty. Ltd. The Department of Transport appointed the South Africa-based technology vendor after consultation with South Africa-based Keith Smith Consulting.
Besides developing the testing service, Clear2Pay will use a certification laboratory in Cape Town, enabling local banks and third party vendors to qualify their cards and devices before they roll them out for public use.
“This will support the strategic objectives of facilitating automated fare collection via bank-issued contactless payment cards,” the release said.
The transportation department is trying to establish an integrated automatic fare-collection system that would cover various transport projects, including the minibus taxi project in the North West Province and the rollout of the Bus Rapid Transit systems in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Parties involved in the project did not respond to PaymentsSource requests for comments by deadline.
