Square, which offers a portable card reader that attaches to smartphones and tablets, is putting more emphasis on its Square Register app, which is meant to function as a replacement for a point of sale terminal. Square recently enhanced the Register product by tying it to Square Market, a new online marketplace for Square merchants.

Rajaram was most recently Facebook's director of ads, a role he took after Facebook bought the company he co-founded, Chia Labs, according to Square's June 27 press release. Prior to that, Rajaram was product management director for Google AdSense.

"I've been fortunate to work for two mission-driven, world-changing companies, and Square's vision and passion for helping businesses grow is inspiring," said Rajaram in the release. "I'm thrilled to join the team and help build amazing products that drive economic growth and empower local businesses around the world."
