Square, which has been selling its Apple-friendly new reader for $49 on its own site, revealed Feb. 3 that it will sell the readers for the same price at Apple stores.
With reports leaking that future iPhones would not have a standard earphone jack, Square alleviated any concerns about where its mobile card readers would fit in that equation by creating a freestanding card reader.
The reader accepts Apple Pay from iPhones and communicates wirelessly through the Square app to a merchant's account on a phone or Square Stand tablet. It also accepts payments from smartphones and EMV chip cards. Square provides a free magstripe reader with a purchase of the Near Field Communication and chip reader so merchants can also accept swipe transactions.
