Stripe buys Bouncer to bring authentication pros in-house

Stripe has upgraded its identity technology several times during its expansion, including its Friday acquisition of Bouncer, a firm that mitigates fraud during online transactions.

Bouncer's team and technology will join Stripe and will work on Radar, Stripe's machine-learning payment fraud reduction tool.

Radar's models track purchases made at millions of merchants globally each day, and is integrated into Stripe's payments platform. Radar red-flags high-risk transactions, and the Bouncer deal will allow a combination with card scanning and verification to reduce false positives.

Stripe has expanded its online payments business into new categories during the pandemic, using its high valuation to support a diversification of products and geography. The payment company has also enhanced its fraud risk technology, including acquiring authentication technology to adhere to PSD2's strong authentication requirements.
