Thai Banks Lift ATM Fees In Reaction To Area Flooding

Banks in Thailand have agreed to eliminate some ATM-withdrawal fees as part of a relief offering in reaction to flooding in the capital city of Bangkok and other towns.

All 15 of the Thai Bankers Association's members agreed not to charge customers for cash withdrawals initiated on their own banks’ ATMs anywhere in the country effective Nov. 3.

Previously, withdrawals on home bank ATMs within a provincial area were free for cardholders, but customers paid a bank-dependent charge per cash withdrawal outside of the region. Now home-bank withdrawals will be free countrywide.

The moratorium on the fees will last until Nov. 30, after which the association will review the situation and decide whether it should be lifted, the statement said.

Similarly, the use of non-home bank ATMs has also been relaxed. Cardholders still pay 10 baht (3 U.S. cents or 2 euro cents) per cash withdrawal in the Bangkok provincial area and 20 baht outside of it, but they now get four such withdrawals free per month.

ATM cash withdrawals have increased over the past few days as Bangkok residents evacuated the city with floodwaters rising daily, according to local media reports.
