Garanti Bank and Turkish mobile-network operator Avea recently moved from a pilot to a general a rollout of its NFC system, which enables consumers to initiate payments by waving their mobile phones near terminals also equipped with NFC chips.

For the program, consumers must buy a SIM card with an NFC antenna to preload funds into their account, which they would access using MasterCard Worldwide’s PayPass contactless-payment service.

San Jose, Calif.-based VeriFone has supplied 10,000 NFC-capable PINpad 1000SE terminals to Turkey-based Garanti for merchant use to accept the NFC payments. Garanti likely will distribute the terminals to thousands of different merchants, and the initial focus of the Garanti NFC program is on micropayments, a VeriFone spokesperson said in an e-mail statement.

Garanti also used VeriFone 1000SE terminals to support its Bonus Trink system, which enables bank customers to use a credit card, key fob, watch or the Bonus Trink sticker to make contactless payments.

VeriFone also supports mobile NFC terminal systems in China, the U.S. and Australia.
