Uber adds fleet card to load-sharing app for truckers

Uber Freight, the ride-hailing giant’s load-sharing app for the trucking industry, is collaborating with the fleet-card giant Fleetcor on a payment card that offers drivers discounts for gas, engine maintenance and tires.

The Uber Freight Fuel Card provides companies that use Uber Freight to connect trucks with loads to haul with a card and app to manage and control trucking-related expenses on the road, according to a Wednesday press release.

Uber has long used its large user base and easy payment experience to offer related services.

Available as a Mastercard credit or debit card, the new Uber payment card leverages technology and expertise from Comdata, a Fleetcor division with deep processing and management expertise in fleet card programs, the release said.

Trucking companies using the new card are eligible for discounts at participating truck stops and retailers negotiated through the Uber Freight Plus program, and Comdata’s technology includes automatic compliance for national and state permit requirements, according to the release. One deal includes 20 cents off per gallon on fuel at participating TA and Petro stations.

“This was a natural fit for us as both companies are aligned to help trucking companies with loads to haul,” Comdata North America President Greg Secord said in the press release.

The new fuel card for trucking companies is a key component of the Uber Freight Plus program to help trucking companies save on operations costs, Bill Driegert, director of Uber Freight, said in the release.

Uber already offers a Partner Fuel Card via Mastercard and Fleetcor, providing drivers with discounts of up to 15 cents a gallon at most gas stations. Each week the card balance is automatically deducted from participating Uber drivers’ earnings.
