UniRush LLC is following the lead of other prepaid card providers and has released a free smartphone application cardholders may use to check their balances and review transaction and funds-transfer histories.
RushCard holders may download the app either to Apple Inc.’s iPhone or to any device that supports Google Inc.’s Android mobile-operating system, the company announced Aug. 29 in a press release. IPhone users may initiate the card-to-card funds transfer feature by bumping devices with each other.
UniRush charges $2.95 per cardholder-to-cardholder funds transfer.
UniRush executives were unavailable for comment.
The company’s competitors, such as Green Dot Corp. and NetSpend Corp., offer similar smartphone applications.
“It’s a logical add-on for [RushCard],” notes Ben Jackson, a senior analyst with the prepaid advisory service at Mercator Advisory Group. “[The app] is certainly something all the prepaid providers are going to have to do.”
Cardholders also may access their account information through any Internet-ready mobile device using the phone’s Web browser.
The app does not offer much variety from the mobile website besides the iPhone “bump feature,” but the app is a way for providers to stay current with the market as smartphones become more popular, Jackson says.
