Wells Fargo & Co. is offering PIN-debit capability for the RebelCard student identification card provided to students and faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The added function is one of two financial enhancements to the card resulting from a partnership announced Monday between the San Francisco-based bank and the school.
Students can link the RebelCard to a Wells Fargo checking account and use it to pay for purchases both on and off-campus wherever is accepted.
They also can use the card to withdraw funds surcharge-free from 12,000 Wells Fargo and Wachovia Corp. ATMs nationwide, including 200 in the Las Vegas area. Students can withdraw funds from any ATM, but if it is not Wells Fargo ATM, the students pay a surcharge fee.
The university, the card’s issuer, began offering students the financial enhancements on Jan. 11, the first day of second-semester classes for the 25,000-member student body, says Bobbie J. Kroman, the school’s senior executive director for staff administration. It is too early to determine how many students will link their cards to a Wells Fargo account, Kroman says. The card carries Star, Interlink, Plus, Instant Cash and Pulse trademarks.
Students also can keep the basic RebelCard, which they can use to access a proprietary school account.
Students can deposit funds into their RebelCard accounts, enabling them to purchase textbooks, print and copy papers, wash and dry laundry, pay for meals in the dining hall and pay for purchases at off-campus vendors. Students also use the RebelCard as an electronic key to enter campus buildings.
