VeriFone Says It Laid Off 100 Workers In December

Point-of-sale terminal maker VeriFone Holdings Inc. disclosed this week that it laid off approximately 100 employees in December in response to weakened demand for the San Jose, Calif.-based company's products. CEO Douglas G. Bergeron told analysts during a conference call yesterday that in the past year VeriFone has cut its headcount by 500, or 21.5%. As of the end of January, the company had 2,324 employees, a spokesperson says.
