Verizon Wireless plans next month to impose a $2 fee for every payment subscribers make over the phone or online with their credit cards, the telecommunication company announced Dec. 30.

The country’s largest cell phone company said its “convenience fee” will debut on Jan. 15. According to Verizon, the new fee will not apply to electronic check payments or to automatic credit card payments set up through its AutoPay system.

In addition, payments made by credit card in one of its stores also will remain free, as will payments by check.

Verizon is not the first to look to fees to push customers to set up automatic fees. AT&T and Spring Nextel both have similar plans.
